Slope Stabilisation

Guernsey: Wednesday 22nd April 2026 – 7:30pm – Les Cotils

Jersey: Thursday 23rd April 2026 – 5:30pm – Jersey Museum (Ouless Room) – Book tickets for free here

This presentation provides an overview of modern slope stabilisation techniques, with a particular focus on high‑performance solutions developed by Geobrugg for managing geotechnical and rockfall risks. It will outline the causes and consequences of slope instability, including erosion, landslides, rockfall, and debris flow, and explain how these risks can impact infrastructure, public safety, and long‑term asset resilience.

Duncan will introduce engineered systems for slope stabilisation and protection, including flexible steel mesh systems, rockfall barriers, erosion control solutions, and hybrid stabilisation approaches. The presentation will demonstrate how these systems function, the design principles behind them, and how they are tailored to site‑specific geotechnical conditions. Real‑world case studies and project examples will be used to illustrate practical applications, installation methodologies, performance outcomes, and long‑term maintenance considerations. The session will also highlight the benefits of these solutions in terms of sustainability, durability, constructability, and lifecycle cost efficiency.

Duncan Ecclestone

Duncan Ecclestone is an engineer with 20 years’ experience in the UK geotechnical industry. He graduated from Camborne School of Mines in 2003.

After 7 years as a Geotechnical contractor Duncan jumped at the chance to present the pioneering technology of Swiss Natural Hazard mitigation company GEOBRUGG to the UK geotechnical industry.

Over the past 13 years Duncan has been closely involved in design support, technical support, product development and project delivery across 1000’s of project in the UK. Rockfall fences, Landslide barriers, Slope stabilization, Coastal erosion and even Impact Protection. When not travelling the UK assisting with projects, Duncan is a keen hockey player and manages his local men’s squad. His 2 daughters play hockey at U14 and U12

For Jersey lectures, the doors will open at 5:00pm for a 5:30pm start, with complimentary tea and coffee on arrival. We have limited capacity so if you wish to attend the lecture free bookings can be made via Eventbrite.

CIGPE is the representative body for professional engineering institutions in the Channel Islands. We organize several engineering related events each year including a series of technical lectures. These events are free to attend and contribute to Continued Professional Development. While aimed at engineers, our events are open to all members of the public.
