Sustainable Skyscrapers

Guernsey: Wednesday 20th March, Les Cotils

Jersey: Thursday 21st March 5:30pm, Jersey Museum

In 2016 PLP Architecture and Cambridge University unveiled plans for London’s first timber skyscraper. If built, the 300-meter-tall wooden building will be the tallest of its kind in the world. The skyscraper’s timber frame could lock in 50,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide — equivalent to the annual carbon emissions of 5,000 Londoners.

Ron Bakker is a co-founder of PLP Architecture, and he will be visiting to talk about this project and his ongoing work in sustainable architecture. Ron’s work has included ‘The Edge’ in Amsterdam, (the world’s most sustainable office building), various high-end London developments, and ‘Assima’ – a landmark project in Kuwait City.

Ron speaks regularly at universities, and at various forums on real estate, urban development and digital technology in architecture, (including TEDx). We can expect this to be an interesting and thought-provoking event.

For Jersey lectures in 2024, we have started a new way of presenting and this will be from 5:30pm at the Ouless Room at the Jersey Museum. There will be no catering at these events but during the year we hope to be able to add canapes and drinks. We have limited capacity so if you wish to attend the lecture free bookings can be made via Eventbrite.
